Now that you have created a category I will show you to set up a page to show articles from that category only.

It’s very easy. You need to go to Appearance > Menus and click on Categories (marked with Green):

add category as menu on wordpress

Then you will be able to see all the existing categories. Check the one you want as a menu item and click on Add to menu. Then SAVE! Don’t forget it cause I often do and I wonder why it doesn’t work.

You signed up to wordpress.com and you want to create your first post. You know that there is a dashboard somewhere but you scan’t find it. You end up in this reader/my sites page with basic posting capabilities. UUUggh, where is it?

It’s super easy and I will show you how to find it. I know it’s frustrating because I was frustrated myself. But worry not, Spacecookies come to the rescue.

I want you to login to your wordpress.com account as usual. You will probably end up on your Reader page and it will look something like this:

wordpress com dashboard

Next to the Reader that I have marked with read you see the word “My sites”. Click on it and you will be then taken to the following screen:

wordpress com my sites

Scroll down to that page and see on the left side menu at the button the word WP Admin. Click on the little square and arrow on the side:

wordpress com wp admin

Once you click it you will be then forwarded to your dashboard!

How to make your first WordPress post – Absolute beginner WordPress blog guide

Now that you have your WordPress website up and running, it’s time to write your fantastic content and fill it up with your blog posts.

This tutorial is aimed towards the absolute beginner that hasn’t used WordPress (.org the self-hosted one) before.

It is super easy and by the end of this post, you will know how to create posts and how to blog like a pro!

How to login to WordPress? It’s also super easy.

First, you need to login to your dashboard.

Go to your browser and type www.yourdomain.com/wp-login.php

Then a screen appears that asks for your username and password. Type them in and click on Login.

You will be then forwarded into your Dashboard. On the left side, there is a black vertical menu column. On the very top of the menu, you see the word Dashboard and right under it, you see the word Posts.

If you click on Posts you will enter the menu area where you are going to creating your very own posts.

Click on Add new.

You will then see an empty post screen. On top, there is the title field where you get to type your post’s title and under it, you see a large empty text area. This is where the magic happens. Here you can start typing your posts and creating your wonderful content.

This is how the one I’m writing right now looks like:

Once you are done you need to publish your blog. There a few more things you need to consider such as the type of post or format and the categories.

Type of posts or Format on WordPress

There are different post formats such as Standard (most common and recommended), gallery, quote, audio, etc.

Wordpress post format

We will stick to Standard for now as this is the default type so you don’t need to do anything else for the moment.

Post categories for WordPress

This is very important for sorting out your posts by theme. The default category on a brand new WordPress website is Uncategorized. We don’t want that.

You can create a few categories based on what you are planning to talk about. If you have a beauty website then maybe you want to have categories such as Cosmetics, Hair products, Body products or anything that is related to your genre.

The easiest way is to go to the categories field on the right of your post and click on Add new Category link, right at the bottom of the existing ones:

add new category

In my blog, I have a few different categories, however, I use mostly Technology as my main category and then, for example, Podcast for the ones I use audio clips.

Once you are done writing your post and you have chosen the right category then the only thing left is to publish it.

Hit the publish button and that’s it.

Your new post is now published and visible to your audience. Wasn’t that easy? Now it’s time to start writing your next post 🙂

Stay tuned for more WordPress tutorials and happy blogging.

What do you need to make a wordpress (org) website – A basic guide for the absolute beginner

Wordpress has become the most well known platform for creating websites. On this article I will explain in brief what are the necessary things you need to do to create your own WordPress site.

  1. Let’s start from the vary basics.

You first need to have a name. Well it’s not necessary to begin with that step but it’s something that I usually do first. So you need to get a Domain name. In order to get one  you need to search for domain name providers. In many cases they provide a hosting package as well so it’s good if you can get a domain name and hosting from the same provider. It’s makes things a bit easier but if you can’t get both from the same provider, that’s no problem.

  2. Once you have found your desired domain name you can go ahead and buy it.

The cost for that it’s very low and it can be something like 10 usd or 10€. Maybe less, maybe more, it all depends on the name. After you have purchased it you need to set what is called Domain name servers or DNS. But let’s save that step for a second and jumb a bit forward to the hosting.

  3. In order to have a website up and running you also need a place to host it,

so you need to find a web hosting provider and select a hosting package that suits your budget and your needs best. It can be something that can cost a few dollars or euros per month. Or if you budget allows it and if you think you are going to have lots of traffic then maybe you need to invest in something bigger, like 20€ a month. It’s up to you.

  4. After you have bought it you can then find your DNS and copy it to the Domain name control panel.

Once you do that, in max 24 hours, you will have a domain name up and running. Now all you need is to give content to your name.

Many providers offer through their control panel automatic installation of WordPress with the press of one button. This is the easiest and most convenient way. You go to your control panel, you find the WordPress logo and you click on it. It’s usually very straightforward. You click one the logo which will then take you to a new screen  where you get to select user name and password, a name for your site and that’s pretty much it.

Other providers don’t have that option but that’s no problem either. You just need to do a few extra steps. In most of the cases these steps are creating a database via your control panel – all of them have that function, I have yet to see one that doesn’t offer that- download WordPress, extract it, upload it through FPT or file manager to your server, install it (super easy) and that’s it. You can find a very simple guide here.

If you have read the entire article up to here, congratulations!

You now know how to make your own website, or at least what it takes to make one. It’s not hard and there are always people that are willing to help you . However if you are in the process of deciding to create your own website I suggest you give it a try yourself. The feeling of having built something yourself is very rewarding.

So please, if you followed the above guide , or any guide, I would be very interested to hear how it went for you.
